One of the most common reasons people seek relationship therapy is due to issues in communication. So, what does communication theory say about how people communicate with their partners? This training introduces clinicians to foundational communication theories that illuminate relational patterns in relationship therapy. Participants will integrate communication-based models with concrete clinical skills to enhance assessment, conceptualization, and intervention in relationship dynamics, conflict processes, and emotional regulation during relational distress. This interactive training will be presented live, but you will have the option of registering for a recording.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Identify core principles of relational dialectics, relational stage development, transactional communication processes, and face-related communication dynamics, and apply them to conceptualize couple interaction patterns.

Analyze how dialectical tensions, relational trajectories, and face concerns contribute to recurring conflict, escalation, and disconnection in intimate relationships.

Translate communication theory into clinical interventions by integrating active listening strategies, XYZ statements, and naming practices within couples sessions.

Differentiate and apply conflict management styles and facework strategies to support more constructive negotiation, repair, and mutual understanding between partners.

Evaluate and intervene in emotional flooding by teaching communication-based coping strategies that promote regulation, safety, and productive dialogue.

Inclusive Insight is a place that is as healing for our healers as it is for our clients. We believe humans thrive in connection and community, feeling seen and heard for who they are and what they have experienced. We are a diverse group of clinicians and inspiration-makers who know that to hold others in their process, we must also feel held. Staff are experts in their own identities, lives and careers. We are better clinicians by bringing our whole selves to our work.
